Porcelain Veneers vs Composite Veneers: Which is Best?

Porcelain veneers are generally considered superior to composite veneers when it comes to long-term performance and durability. Both treatments can create a natural, lifelike smile when completed by a skilled dentist, but there are some important differences.

Composite veneers can look excellent when first placed, but due to their porosity, they are more prone to staining and discolouration over time. Abrasion from tooth-brushing can also cause them to lose their shine, and plaque tends to adhere more easily once the surface glaze has worn off. Composite is also weaker at the biting edges and more likely to fracture when used to lengthen teeth.

Porcelain veneers, on the other hand, maintain their smooth, glazed surface for many years, resisting both plaque and staining better than natural enamel. They are thinner (often less than 0.5 mm), highly translucent, and provide a lifelike, natural appearance. While porcelain veneers require multiple visits and are more expensive than composite, they are also much more durable, often lasting decades with proper care.

One advantage of composite veneers is that they can usually be repaired chairside if they chip, while a fractured porcelain veneer typically needs complete replacement. However, for patients seeking a long-lasting, stain-resistant solution, porcelain is the preferred choice.

At Comprehensive Dental Care Queanbeyan, we offer both composite and porcelain veneers and will help you decide which option best suits your smile, lifestyle, and budget.
